What exactly does Au-pair mean?

A Au-pair supports the family with whom it lives, primarily by looking after the children and helping with household chores. However, the Au-pair also takes part in family life and enjoys certain freedoms (e.g. visiting friends).

Au pairs and families are mutually dependent on each other and must therefore be able to rely on each other.

How much and when does a Au-pair work?

You work up to 30 hours per week (including babysitting).

You will have at least 1.5 days off per week.

You can work as a babysitter in the evening by arrangement.

What are the tasks of an au pair?

You will help look after the children. You will also help with the daily light housework (e.g. table setting, clearing up, washing up, cooking, shopping, ironing, children's laundry, vacuuming).

What does the Au-pair receive from the host family?

You get your own room of at least 8 square meters free of charge. Catering, i.e. your food, is free of charge. As a rule, you eat with the family.

You will receive a monthly allowance of 280 euros. The family will cover the costs of accident, health and liability insurance.

You have 4 weeks paid vacation for a stay of 12 months.

The family will enable you to attend a language course. The host family will contribute 70 euros per month towards the cost of the German language course.

What does the pme Familienservice offer au pairs?

The pme Familienservice only places children with selected families. We are available to you during your stay if you have any questions or difficulties.

In extremely problematic situations, Au-pair can be taken in by Familienservice at short notice. Each Au-pair receives a hotline telephone number for emergencies.

What are my tasks as Au-pair?

Ask your host family before your stay what exactly your tasks are: e.g. looking after the children, cleaning the house or apartment, going shopping. You and your host family should agree on what your work is.

What do working hours and free time look like?

Talk about how many hours a week you will work and when you will be off, including weekends.

How much is the pocket money?

Discuss how much money you will receive and how often. Also ask whether the host family will pay for additional costs such as bus or train travel.

How do I live with you?

Find out where you live (your own room, bathroom, etc.) and what there is to eat.

What do you do as a family in your free time?

What's important is how you become part of the family and what you can do in your free time.

How do we resolve conflicts and disagreements?

Decide how and when you talk about expectations and problems. Being open and honest is important.

What happens if I fall ill/emergency occurs (insurance)?

Talk about what will happen if you fall ill or there is an emergency.

Are there house rules?

It is good to know the rules in the family home so that there are no misunderstandings.

Has everyone read the contract?

Make sure you understand your contract, including when and how you or the family can end it.
