Emergency childcare for children in private households

The family lives of working parents are often quite complex. Many do not live near their families of origin and lack a stable network of relatives or friends who can step in at a moment’s notice. At the same time, childcare systems are frequently pushed to their limits when childcare centers close childcare centers or children get sick.

Subject Matter Expert: Tamara Trinkl, Product Manager for Parents & Children

What is emergency childcare in a private home?

In-home caregivers provide care for children when regular caregivers are unavailable on short notice. They ensure care is available in the afternoons and during off-peak hours, as well as when parents have irregular work schedules, and they also care for sick children in their familiar surroundings—with love and personalized attention.

Everyday Care: When Planning Suddenly Isn't Enough

A notice on the childcare center announces that the facility must close early due to a staff shortage. A child develops a fever in the morning. A caregiver is unable to work at the last minute.

Many families have experienced situations where, despite careful planning, everything goes awry. And such situations are not the exception—they are part of everyday life for many families. It is precisely in these moments that a need arises that no traditional childcare service can meet.

“We both work full-time and have everything pretty well organized. But if the childcare center closes early or my son gets sick, our plans fall apart immediately.” Anna M, a mother from Munich

When is emergency childcare in a private home a good idea?

One solution that is becoming increasingly important for many families is in-home childcare. Caregivers come directly to families’ homes to help with daily tasks, such as:

  • After-school care or childcare center.
  • Support in the event of last-minute childcare absences.
  • Care for sick children.
  • Relief for parents with irregular work schedules.

The advantage: Care takes place in the children’s familiar surroundings and can be flexibly tailored to each family’s specific situation.

A Glimpse into the Daily Lives of Caregivers

To get a sense of what this type of care looks like in everyday life, we spoke with caregivers who regularly support families.

What motivates you to work in emergency child care?

Lisa, emergency child care provider: I love being able to support families exactly when they need help. I’m often called in when a child is sick and the parents have to work. Then I spend the day with the child at home. We read, play, or just relax. The most important thing is to make the child feel safe.

What do you often see in families?

Lisa, emergency child care provider: Many parents would actually prefer to have their children looked after by family members, but they don’t have grandparents nearby. So they’re very relieved when a qualified emergency child care provider can step in at short notice.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Mehmet, after-school care provider: I pick up the kids from school, we eat together, do homework, and often go to the playground afterward. For many families, this is a difficult time to manage because it falls right in the middle of their workday.

What do children particularly appreciate about this care?

Mehmet, afternoon care provider: The children like the fact that they don't have to go somewhere else, but can stay in their familiar surroundings.

What do you think makes in-home care so special?

Anna, in-home caregiver: I love that you really get to know the family and become a part of their daily life. It’s especially important to me to be a reliable source of support for the children.

What would you say to people who want to work in this field?

Anna, in-home childcare provider: Providing childcare in private homes is a very rewarding job. You really see how much families rely on this support—and how grateful they are for it.

Childcare in Private Homes: Rethinking Childcare

In-home child care is an important supplement to existing child care options for many families.
It provides flexibility in situations where other solutions don't work:

  • if childcare becomes unavailable at short notice,
  • if work hours do not align with childcare center hours of operation,
  • when there is a lack of family support.

At the same time, it also opens up new career opportunities for people who enjoy working with children and want to support families in their daily lives.

Child Care Day serves as a reminder of how important it is to have people who support families in their daily lives. Especially at a time when traditional support networks are often lacking, this form of care is becoming increasingly important.
