pme donates: Midwives 4 Tanzania

Midwives 4 Tanzania is dedicated to improving obstetric care in Tanzania and reducing infant and maternal mortality. To this end, midwives Conny and Inga regularly conduct on-site training sessions and advocate for higher hygiene standards and better equipment in delivery rooms.

“Our goal is to reduce maternal and infant mortality around the time of birth.”

How did the Midwives 4 Tanzania project come about?

Conny and Inga: We met while volunteering at a health center in Iringa, Tanzania. There, we witnessed very poor obstetric care, including instances of violence and many newborns who, sadly, did not survive. That’s how we came up with the idea of starting our own organization to improve the situation.

What are the project's goals and objectives?

Our goal is to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates related to childbirth. We aim to provide better-trained staff and thereby improve obstetric care. We are also working to raise hygiene standards and improve the equipment in delivery rooms. For example, last year we were able to install hand sanitizer dispensers in nearly all of Iringa’s hospitals.

We travel to Tanzania regularly to conduct seminars, training sessions, and continuing education courses for hospital staff and midwives who are still in training. Every year, we develop new presentations on topics such as emergency management, general childbirth support, and pain management. We already partner with several schools and hospitals for our seminars, which we visit annually. We would like to further expand these partnerships.

How can the €6 Familienservice 250 donation from pme Familienservice help you achieve your goals?

To improve the equipment in our delivery rooms, we rely on monetary and in-kind donations. With the generous donation from pme Familienservice , we Familienservice purchase supplies for our training sessions. For example, we plan to purchase a baby resuscitation manikin, a “MamaBirthie,” and a birth model (phantom) so that we can simulate and practice practical obstetric care and emergency situations with our colleagues and students on-site.

What are the plans for the project's future development in the coming years?

We want to continue growing as an organization. To that end, we would like to establish more partnerships with clinics and schools and build a network throughout Iringa (25,503 km², 202,490 residents).

In order to provide safe obstetric care and a positive birth experience for as many women in labor as possible, we eventually hope to expand our services beyond the borders of Iringa.

How can private individuals and organizations support your work?

Anyone interested is welcome to join the Midwives 4 Tanzania associationand, of course, make a donation. We are also looking for experienced professionals who would like to help us with our workshops, for example.

Social commitment of the pme Familienservice

The "pme donates" fundraising campaign has been running for five years, giving pme team members the opportunity to nominate charitable organizations in the fields of "international development aid," "social work," "climate and animal protection," and "culture" for a donation that they actively support. All team members then vote on the organizations they want to support. The organizations with the most votes receive a donation from pme Familienservice.

In 2025, five national and international organizations received a total of €50,000 in donations—a joint demonstration that social engagement is an integral part of pme's corporate culture.
