What are the Rauhnächte?
The Rauhnächte are those mystical twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany, which are traditionally regarded as a time of reflection and inner contemplation. This special phase opens a window for reflection, letting go and reorientation.
Even if you don't think much of traditional customs or mystical meanings, this time offers a practical opportunity to take a deep breath.
We accompany you through this meaningful time. With short videos and soothing meditations , we create moments of mindfulness together that fit harmoniously into your everyday life - even in the busy time "between the years". You can read more about how to do this in the blog below.
Where did the Rauhnächte originate?
The Rauhnächte are traditionally regarded as sacred days that invite us to leave the old behind and make room for the new. They begin on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, which is celebrated as "Yule Night". On this night, light is symbolically reborn, the cycle of the year begins anew and space is created for hope, renewal and strength.
The origins of the Rauhnächte probably lie in the lunar year. A year with twelve lunar months comprises only 354 days, meaning that eleven days are missing from the 365 days of the solar year. In ancient myths, these missing days were regarded as a time when the laws of nature were suspended and the borders to other worlds became permeable.
During the National Socialist era, attempts were made to appropriate this millennia-old custom for a nationalist world view. And even today, right-wing extremist circles are trying to use the Rauhnächte for their own purposes(1). Fortunately with little success!
Nevertheless, it is important to be aware of how customs such as the Rauhnächte have been instrumentalized throughout history in order to maintain a critical distance from ideological reinterpretations.
Many of the rituals of the Rough Nights have since been replaced by Christmas traditions. What has remained, however, is the Christmas season as we know it today - a time of silence and contemplation that ends with Epiphany.
Treat yourself and your employees to these valuable "I" moments. Together, we will enter 2025 mindful and strengthened.
We look forward to this special journey through the Rauhnächte with you!
