Interior design at childcare center: This is what matters

In many pedagogical concepts, rooms are considered the third educator of children alongside parents and teachers. How the rooms are designed has an influence on how the children feel in them. Well-designed rooms stimulate the children's senses and enable a variety of activities and learning experiences. At the same time, they give the child a sense of safety and security.

Christel van Dieken has a degree in education and is an expert in participatory interior design, among other things. We asked her five questions.

Ms. van Dieken, why is pedagogical room design so important?

Christel van Dieken: Rooms have an effect - always: they have a stimulating effect, can bore, calm, make aggressive. And they always stimulate children's learning and development processes through their design. Rooms cannot have no effect.

What should be given special consideration when designing the room?

It is important that the users of the rooms develop a clear concept of what effect they want to achieve with the rooms. The educational use of the rooms is therefore about the question of which educational concept you want to enable in your room.

What is participatory interior design?

Involving children in room design means, first of all, observing them, noticing and understanding their needs and responding to them with the design of the room and the materials. This applies equally to all age groups.

What should children find in a room?

Children should find in a room what awakens their interests, promotes their skills and encourages them to take the next step in their development.

Is there a difficulty that you encounter time and again?

Educators often think that participatory room design means that you only have to ask the children what they want. In my webinar, participants will find out what else I think this means.

Adapt the rooms to the children's needs: Room design in the pme Lernwelten

Rooms must adapt to the needs of the children, and not the other way around. Room design is an ongoing process based on the observation of the children, the perception and precise documentation of their actions and interests.

Needs-based room design is an integral part of the educational concept at pme Lernwelten. We are in constant contact with experts in the field, incorporate new findings from science and research into our considerations and continue to develop.

We are delighted to have gained Christel van Dieken, an expert and pioneer in the field of participatory interior design.
