Identifying learning types: How does my child learn?

Everyone learns differently. This is especially true for children. While one prefers to listen to stories and read books, another wants to go out into the world and experience and touch nature. This is why there are four different learning types. These provide a helpful guide to finding suitable learning and teaching methods for your own child.

1 What actually is a learning type?

"Learning types" refer to different ways of learning. The main distinction is how learning content is perceived and best processed.

Information is generally received via the various channels of perception such as sight, hearing or touch.

Learning types are based on the assumption that each person can absorb information differently via different channels. The names and classifications of the individual learning types vary depending on the model. In addition, they cannot always be clearly separated from one another. As a rule, we speak here of tendencies on a spectrum.

2 What are the different types of learners?

To describe how different people learn, the following four learning types are generally distinguished: haptic, communicative, visual or auditory .

Not everyone can be clearly assigned to a group, but they provide helpful orientation. Because if you know how your child best absorbs information, you can adapt your teaching accordingly.

2.1 Haptic learning type

Haptic learners are often pragmatic people. They are usually considered sporty and have a great urge to move. They learn by trying things out.

Children usually notice that they have to touch things and feel them with their sense of touch in order to get to the bottom of them. Teachers often classify this urge as ADHD, although this form of learning disability should only be diagnosed by doctors and therapists.

Strengths of haptic learners:

  • Distinct body awareness
  • Complex thinking

Weaknesses of haptic learners:

  • Impatience - often want to "jump straight into" a topic
  • Low attention span

The haptic learning type learns best when movement is integrated into the exercises

Breathing exercises also help him to concentrate better and for longer. It helps him to memorize what he has learned by hand, i.e. to have the information written down again.

2.2 Communicative learning type

Communicative learners enjoy talking to other people and reflecting on what they have learned. They like to ask questions about the topic.

He learns best in dialog with others and can thus filter out the information that is important to him more easily.

Strengths of communicative learners:

  • Empathy, teamwork
  • High attention span

Weaknesses of communicative learners:

  • Unstructured or chaotic way of working
  • Lack of self-drive

Communicative learners excel in project or group work, as they can exchange ideas with others and process the information in conversation.

In order to learn at home, he should imagine himself explaining the subject to someone else. This type of learner in particular benefits from working with a tutor

Does your child need tutoring? pme has an offer for you!

Tutoring can help both communicative and auditory learners in particular when learning difficulties arise. Both types benefit from having the subject matter explained to them in a different way than at school.

Thanks to our cooperation with the online platform bidi.one, you get access to over 1,000 tutors who offer qualified tutoring in 15 school subjects and for all grades. And the best thing is: pme customers save up to 29% on the price of a tutoring session. You can find more information about the offer on the My Familienservice service portal.

2.3 Visual learning type

The visual learning type is mainly found in structured and creative people. They like to imagine things in their mind's eye.

It is therefore particularly helpful for them if they can prepare the learning material in a visually appealing way or consume it as a video format.

Strengths of visual learners:

  • Creativity, inventiveness
  • Tidy & structured

Weaknesses of visual learners:

  • Concentration difficulties
  • Quickly bored by a topic

Anything that is visually appealing helps the visual learner to absorb information. For example, they can design their own outline for the learning material, enhance notes with stickers and markers, stick colorful post-its with learning content on the wall or create a mood board on the topic.

A visual representation of the material using graphics or videos also helps him to learn. Various concentration exercises also help him to learn.

2.4 Auditory learning type

Auditory learning types process information mainly through hearing. They tend to be introverted and quiet. It is important for them to receive an explanation of images or texts in order to better understand what they have learned. They are active and attentive listeners.

Strengths of auditory learners:

  • High ability to concentrate
  • Very patient

Weaknesses of auditory learners:

  • quickly doubts his abilities
  • Read

Auditory learners can use earplugs to block out distracting noises and concentrate better. Another option is to listen to classical music while learning.

Listening to podcasts on a specific topic is a great way for auditory learners to absorb information.

Reading texts out loud is another effective method that can help you to better understand and retain the learning material. By listening to your own voice, the information is anchored aurally.

3. learning type test: How can you find out your learning type?

You can determine your own learning type using a so-called learning type test. Many of these tests can be found on the Internet. We recommend the following:

Such tests help parents and children to better understand their strengths and preferences in the learning process. It is therefore important to answer honestly and focus on your own preferences and habits.

However, it should be noted that learning types are not set in stone and can change over time. It is therefore advisable to review the learning type test at regular intervals.

Note from the bidi editorial team

We would like to point out that the theory of learning types has long been widespread and has helped many people to organize the learning process.

Today, there is a growing debate about its scientific basis. Some experts argue that this division into fixed learning types is too simplistic and does not cover the full complexity of learning.

Learning is an individual process that depends on many factors. Therefore, we cannot rely solely on the classification of learning types, but should explore different learning strategies and approaches.

However, it is also important to emphasize that some people have certain preferences when it comes to their learning style. And the learning type test may make it easier for some people to find their personal style.
