Child protection in practice: symposium pme Lernwelten

(Berlin, 12.11.2024). Under the motto "Strong childcare centers for strong children", the NRW symposium last Monday was dedicated to the topic of "Living child protection in the pme childcare centers". For the first time, 350 team members, responsible persons and regional managers from the childcare facilities of pme Familienservice as well as experts from science and democracy education came together to advocate for strong children and safe childcare centers

A day full of pedagogy and practical impulses

The symposium took place on Monday, November 4 in Bonn and offered educational professionals at pme Lernwelten the opportunity to gain valuable ideas and methods for their daily work through practical presentations and workshops. The 13 workshops on the topic of child protection were largely moderated by team members from pme Lernwelten and created valuable spaces for reflection.

"This day full of pedagogy enabled us to focus intensively on a wide range of topics, take away new ideas and put them directly into practice," says Nadine Auf der Mauer, NRW manager of pme Lernwelten, "Such days not only promote personal development, but also strengthen the entire team and sustainably improve the quality of childcare center. These joint days are an important basis for our cooperation for team members, daycare management, specialist advisors and the provider."

Regular specialist days for our (educational) staff are also held in other regions to promote the exchange of knowledge.

The speakers and external guests at the "Living child protection" symposium

  • Prof. Dr. Rehmsperger Kehm with a lecture on "No to hurtful behavior - strengthening sensitive handling".
  • Mr. Seelig from the Institute for Participation and Education spoke on the topic of "Co-decision and co-action - participation is child protection in action".
  • Mr. Rheingans from the Cologne Child Protection Association provided insights into sex education and showed how a conscious approach to this topic strengthens child protection.
  • Benjamin-Hendrik Mahl from pme Lernwelten childcare center -coordination discussed the opportunities and risks of AI and media literacy in the context of child protection.
  • Nicole Dreesen represented the Netzwerk Offene Arbeit Deutschland on site.

"Holistic learning requires us to constantly look at specialist knowledge from new perspectives - be it through scientific findings or tried-and-tested approaches. This is the only way to create spaces for reflection and practice transfer that strengthen and value professionals in their commitment to child protection." Says Stephanie Niemierza, Central Advisory Service at pme Lernwelten and summarizes: "The NRW symposium 'Strong childcare centers for strong children' brought together over 350 participants to engage in dialogue through a variety of educational impulses and to jointly shape a safe, child-friendly future."

The child protection concept of the pme Lernwelten

A protection concept that is practiced on a daily basis can prevent dangers and misconduct and helps us to act quickly and purposefully in acute cases of suspicion. It supports us in our goal of protecting the integrity of the children and at the same time keeping an eye on the care of the team members. We have developed a comprehensive child protection concept to protect children and make them strong.
